The original production of Sophia ran Off-Off Broadway at the Richmond Shepard Theater in NYC. It was produced by John Lant for Write Act Repertory Eastside.

Subtitled The Beautiful Woman Syndrome and the Invisible Man, Sophia is a comedic musical which plays to the changing times of the 1960s. Our hero Sophia is a beautiful, articulate and educated woman whose blind spot is relationships. To break her pattern of sequential frequent encounters with boyfriends, who depart after short term contact, Sophia enters into therapy with renowned relationship expert Jake Kelly.

Diagnosed with “Beautiful Woman Syndrome,” part of her rehabilitation is to recognize the  “hit-men” who are only looking for a quick tryst. Sophia must learn about the forgotten majority of male society and try to focus on the “invisible men,” those who would never approach her, if she is to find true love.

This was a developmental workshop production starring Courtney Glass (Broadway's Woman in White). During pre-production and throughout the rehearsal process, the show was continually being shaped and rewritten. I worked with the authors to tighten and focus the script and with the musical director to adjust the arrangements to reflect the musical styles of the 1960s. We expanded the role of a single "Everyman" into an ensemble of five men and women to fill out vocal arrangements and production numbers. The success of this original run led to productions in Los Angeles and a run in the Midtown International Theatre Festival.
